With the change of ownership at a Kalona insurance agency, the name has been changed from Hochstedler Insurance Agency, to Southeast Iowa Insurance Services, but the staff remains the same.
Shawn Powell, owner of Southeast Iowa Insurance, headquartered in Wellman for the past 32 years, acquired MAX (formerly Mennonite Mutual Insurance) in 2014 with an office in the Kalona Coffee House. He closed that office when he acquired Hochstedler Insurance Agency at 110 5th Street, Kalona.
“Kevin gave us the opportunity for us to expand our insurance offerings to the Kalona community,” Shawn said. “I am a native of Wellman and my wife, Tonya, is a native of Kalona.”
Shawn said he appreciates the professional quality of staff that was in place in Kalona and saw no need for staff changes. Kevin Johnson, Mark Hoffman, Jared Waters, Dawn Fisher and Anita Purdy are all licensed agents and continue in their same positions.
Cindy Marner, Angela Stutzman, Canaan Powell, Jeff Spenner and Moriah Lewis staff the Southeast Iowa Insurance Services Corporation, Wellman office, 214A 8th Avenue, Wellman.
Shawn splits his time between both offices.
“The only thing that has changed is that we are able to offer a lot more companies to our clients in the line of auto, home, farm, crop and commercial insurance including life and health, and group benefits,” he said. “We can now offer a lot more lines of insurance companies.”
Shawn noted that he and Tonya also took into consideration that family members are wanting to be a part of the business. They have seven children with the youngest, Mathyan, now a freshman at UNI. Isaiahn, is a junior at UNI. They are both majoring in business. Breighen and his wife, Emily, live in Des Moines where he is a member of the City of Des Moines Fire Dept.
