Kalona By-Ways bus tours through the Amish Countryside north of Kalona begin on Monday, April 1. Tours leave the Chamber of Commerce office at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.,  Monday through Friday.

Enjoy a 90-minute ride through the Amish countryside north of Kalona while your Kalona By-Ways Tour Bus driver informs you about the Amish history and lifestyle.

You will enjoy seeing the landscape dotted by Amish homes, one room schools, Amish homes, manicured gardens and Amish working the fields (seasonally) with their horses. You will enjoy a relaxing ride, as you seem to be taking a step back in time.

Plus you will be given an opportunity to visit several unique shops, a bakery & gift shop plus an Amish variety store. You will get a good orientation of the shops and countryside so you can return to tour the area at your leisure.

Your tour bus drivers – John Hershberger, Dan Nisly and Cal Hochstedler
– all grew up in the Kalona area and are very familiar with the Amish lifestyle. Nisly grew up Amish, Hershberger’s grandfather was an Amish Bishop and Hochstedler has Amish relatives. All three welcome your questions and can point out special points of interest you might not see on your own.

They will be sure to point out the Kalona Historical Village, Kalona Sales Barn, Maple Avenue Greenhouse, a harness shop, Amish variety stores, and much more.  During the summer you will enjoy seeing the many carefully cared for gardens too.

Either before or after you tour, we encourage you to visit the many specialty stores, antique shops, restaurants and the Kalona Historical Village during your visit to Kalona.

Reserve you seats on the By-Ways tour bus at least 15 minutes before the start of each tour. Or you can make advance reservations by calling for 319-656-2660.

Cost is $15 for adults and $6 for children, and kids under 6 years old ride free. Make reservations early, as each tour is limited to 14 passengers.
