The Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce
The city of Kalona is located 15 miles south of Iowa City perfectly nestled into the rolling countryside of southeastern Iowa, The city’s rich cultural heritage dates back to the late 1830s when pioneers began immigrating from the east. The Amish arrived in 1846 when Iowa gained statehood. The city was formally incorporated in 1870 during the booming expansion of the Burlington, Cedar Rapids, and Northern Railway (BCR&N).
Kalona is now better known as the “Quilt Capitol of Iowa” boasting a plethora of stores dedicated to preserving the art of quilt making. We’ve taken the title seriously, too, which is apparent through over 40 quilt designs paved into the downtown streetscape. The quaint downtown center features one-of-a-kind dining options, locally-owned antique and craft shops, and longstanding service establishments.
The Kalona Area Chamber of Commerce represents over 70 area businesses. Our mission is to promote and advocate for our members with the intention of strengthening the local economy. We serve as a catalyst for growth through local and regional advertising, the advancement of economic assets, and through leadership for special events and community initiatives.
The Chamber also serves as town’s central hub for visitor’s information. With expert knowledge of the attractions and businesses serving the area, the Chamber Visitor’s Center should be your first stop in Kalona.

Kalona Byways Tours: Temporary Cancellation
The ByWays tours have temporarily been suspended until which time the Governor of Iowa gives an okay for most businesses to re-open and the threat of the coronavirus is over.

Get an insiders view of Amish life. Travel the scenic back roads with our expert guides and discover the world of the Amish, who continue to flow with the seasons and live the simple, wholesome lives of our great grandparents. See their homes, schools, farms, and beautifully manicured gardens as you pass.
Tours operate twice daily, at 11AM and at 1PM, and last roughly 90 minutes. Except for major holidays, tours run from April 1 to October 31 (Mondays – Saturdays). You can book your seat by calling the Chamber at (319) 656-2660 or stopping in each day.
Adults tickets are $20, tickets for kids ages 6-12 years old are $10, and children under 6 are free. The bus can hold 14 passengers and can accomodate persons with limited mobility or disabilities.
